Hello all, and welcome!
Well, we're officially fewer than forty days from our first mile north. The past two months have been a whirl of excitement, and the ball keeps rolling as our trip gains momentum. Consider this our Monday newsletter - weekly updates that will continue through the start of our trip. I'm Reese, Keys to Freeze co-founder and trip writer. You may be waiting on a haiku from me ... know they are coming, one syllable at a time, into your inbox.
We have exciting news that we want to share with you:
The Cause: We will be raising funds and awareness for Climate Ride and the National Parks Conservation Association as well as participating in preservation projects in various State and National Parks. Climate Ride is a nonprofit organization that organizes life-changing charitable events to raise awareness and support sustainability, active transportation, and environmental causes. They host several rides every year. We have teamed up with them as part of their Independent Challenge Program and will be raising funds and awareness for Climate Ride and the NPCA once our trip starts. The National Parks Conservation Association works every day to ensure our national parks receive vital care and support. They play a crucial role in ensuring that these magnificent lands and landmarks are protected in perpetuity.
K2F Makes the NPCA Facebook: it was a big day. Brady Lawrence worked with Jennifer Errick of the NPCA on a Q&A article that was shared on the NPCA's Facebook, which has 252,000 likes. Their post about Keys to Freeze received over 1,000 likes and was shared over 230 times. Check out the NPCA Facebook.
Narratively: Last month we got in touch with the online magazine Narratively, which Brady and I consider to be one of the most beautiful sites around. We're excited to announce that Keys to Freeze is going to be working on a 15 part multimedia serial that will be published to Narratively during the trip. We'll be submitting a series of articles, stills, and videos - stories of the road, of the people we meet, of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We're involving the Chapel Hill film community with this effort by coordinating with local editors to edit and produce high quality video shorts of our footage from the road.
Donations: A week ago we launched our trip donation page and have almost raised 25% of our fundraising goal! The money raised to our $18,000 goal will pay for food, camping, laundry, and video production costs of our trip. Once we hit our $18,000 mark we'll open up our Climate Ride donation page, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-deductible. The excess money from the K2F fundraising will go towards Climate Ride at the trip's end. Check out our Donation page - we're offering a tiered reward system.
Host Outreach: A necessary part of our planning for this coming month is figuring out where we are going to sleep. We're looking for hosts and need your help! Below is a chart with all of the Continental US host locations that we do not have a contact for. If you could please take a look, see if you know anyone in the towns we are going through, and connect them to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. With every host connection we'll be saving money on camping, which means more money will go to Climate Ride at the trip's end!
Media Sharing: We have Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. If you haven't yet, like us and follow us! Our trip social media wizard Megan puts out inspiring stuff, and we invite you to share our information through your accounts.
I guess that's it for now. I know that there a lot of links so do with them what you will. We're just excited to be sharing with you our updates - to share with you our trip one email at a time. If at any point you wish to be removed from the mailing list just let us know. Until next week, we look forward to hearing from you!
